How to Connect to a Sonos Speaker

How do you connect to a Sonos speaker?

Whether it’s friends or family coming to visit and wanting to share their music with our Sonos system or setting up their own Sonos speakers at home, we have received this question and many others like it. It isn’t immediately obvious how you can actually connect to these Sonos speakers so that they can play your favorite music and you can be able to listen to your favorite music on the go.

To begin with, the first thing you should know about Sonos is that it is not a Bluetooth device, except for a few exceptions. In order to connect from a phone or a tablet to a wireless speaker, the majority of wireless speakers use the Bluetooth RF standard.

While it is handy when you’re out and about or just want to listen to music through a single speaker from a single phone, it doesn’t scale well when you want to listen to music from multiple phones at the same time. In order for you to be able to play music in multiple rooms in your house – and operate that system from multiple devices at the same time – you’re going to need something that is more robust and scalable than Bluetooth.

Sonos is designed to be able to play back music from multiple sources on multiple speakers simultaneously. In order to do this, Sonos speakers are connected to the internet via WiFi or a hard-coded Ethernet cable that is hard-wired into your home network. The Sonos app on your phone or tablet can be used to play music anywhere in your home once your Sonos speakers are connected to your home network and connected to your home wireless network.

to connect to a Sonos speaker:

  1. If you have an Android or iOS device, a mobile phone, a PC, or a MacBook, you need to install the Sonos app

  2. Your Sonos speaker(s) should be plugged into the power outlet

  3. In the Sonos app, select “Set up a new system” (in the case that this is your first Sonos speaker) or “Join Nearby System” (in the case that you are connecting to an existing Sonos system or speaker at a neighbor’s house, for example).

  4. To configure a new Sonos speaker or system, you will need to follow the instructions in the Sonos app that will guide you through the process

  5. The Sonos speaker will automatically be added to your home network once you click the music note icon at the bottom of the app, which will allow you to add your different music sources and music streaming accounts, such as Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music – once you have done this, it won’t need to be done again

  6. The music services that you have added will appear under the music note icon in the Sonos app, and you will be able to select what music you would like to play, as well as which Sonos speaker(s) you would like to play the music through

  7. When the app is open, click on the “play” button

It’s as simple as that. The volume and playback controls can be controlled either using the Sonos app or directly from the speaker itself once you have been connected and playing music. Usually there are two controls on the top or side of a Sonos speaker that allow you to control the volume and play/pause the music. You may skip from one song to another by pressing the pause button twice at the same time.

If you have gone over all this and still are having trouble, make sure you visit the Sonos support website for help. For those who are just starting out, they have a series of tutorials and videos that will assist you.

In addition to the Sonos Roam and the Sonos Move, some Sonos speakers have Bluetooth connectivity, which means that they can be connected to a phone or a mobile device via Bluetooth in a similar way to any other speaker. Using WiFi, these speakers are also able to integrate into a whole home Sonos music system which can be controlled remotely.
